Shawshank Redemption (1994)

“This is… incredible movie..”-Yessica Olivia

A piece of movie based on Stephen King’s, directed by Frank Darabont, and played by Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, James Whitmore, and friends.

Quote from IMDb: “Two imprisoned men bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.”

There’s no doubt this movie could get 8.2 out of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes and 9.3 out of 10 on IMDb rating. Even it’s a fiction movie, it has the soul of real life. I do believe if it were a true story. This movie, makes me more realize, how our life is. Many things to be realized,

many things to be understood, many things to be contemplated. That movie, is life. This movie teaches you more than you know. You’d better watch, cause each person has their own understanding.

Although I think I couldn’t describe perfectly, cause I think there are thousands feelings and thoughts in this head that I can’t express it all, however I’d try my best to share what’s mine… *it’s better if you read slowly and soulful, then contemplate it by deep thinking. I suggest you to watch the movie first, then read my review*

This movie, teaches me a lot of things. There are only three men of this story could teach me about life. Brook, Red, and (of couse) Andy. I am so aware about what Brook’s been through on his life, and that’s how I know as reality that every single person had. What I mean is, that “institutionalized” word, happens in everyone. We had that cursed word, yes, that cursed word. It curses us, haunts every human on this earth who’s still breathin’ in this air.

I tell you these walls are funny. First you hate them. Then you get used to them. Enough time passes…you get so you depend on them. That’s institutionalized

This make me laugh so much, cause I think I watch this movie at the right time. I laugh at myself, I’ve been seeing my own mirror on Brook’s life.

How someone doesn’t belong at someplace, he only live in fear, and all he wants is to be back where things make sense. Where he won’t have to be afraid all the time.

That cursed word, I laugh at. It’s happening on me now.

Red, my favourite story teller, he’s the best on it. He’s so great embracing the feelings of the audience. His way telling the story, analyzing and describing moments by his views, had exposed our feelings. He find a perfect way to define the word of loneliness and freedom at the same time. How a small thing happen in your life, just like a right moment happened in the right time. Then you will realize, how it means much more than it looks. Moments like sitting in the rooftop while drinking a beer, or listening music in the middle of your critical’s life, could make you have a better understanding to define the value of ‘free’ on your ‘lonely’ life.

Red also had a great touch on telling people how is the feeling of missing someone. How he could merge the idea of his friend fly away off the cage with rejoice like a bird, while his feeling is mixing up between happy and empty because of losing him.

One more thing I’ve learned is that place, the prison. I’ve known what the real world say about prison. I’ve known people who used to be there, and I knew that all things on this movie, are definitely true. All about the people, the guards, the rules, the routines, and that every details. That’s damn right truly terrible. A nightmare. It’s hard to keep a mind clear once you get inside. You’ll learned so much things, and your eyes will widely open. You will know the other side of ordinary life that you’d always know. And if you had an open minded, you will learn and realize, that it will make big change of your point of view about life. Yes, big change.

And Andy, he taught me about patience, bravery, persistence and….hope. Like he said,

Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don’t forget. Forget that there are…places…in the world that aren’t made out of stone. There’s something..inside.. that they can’t get to, that they can’t touch. That’s yours. Hope is a good thing…maybe the best of things. And no good things ever dies.”

Hope, for me, is a word that give both sanity and insanity at the same time. It’s the most powerfull weapon and greatest motivation in life, dispite of any side you’ll choose. Life is all about what path you decide to walk through. Better if you immediately stop dreaming and wake up from others’ hopes, and then define what’s yours. Cause in the end, you will take your own journey by get busy living… or get busy dying.

Like Brook, Andy and Red, they had found what’s theirs.

Then, what’s yours?
